Partial information from an article “Klinger Farms hit 100” in the Chippewa Herald dated July 3, 2003
Max Klinger moved from southern Wisconsin with his team of horses to this area in 1903.
The secret of the company's success is the dedication of the family, passing from grandfather Max, to his son John, and now John's three sons -- Robert, Dennis and David. Members of the fourth and fifth generations of Klingers are now active in the business.
Max started a typical small dairy farm in 1903, with a few cows and a variety of other farm animals.
But quite early on, Max was interested in raising domesticated fox for fur.
"In the 1930s, it was a very popular fur. Dad said it saved the farm during the Depression,"
David said.
"Dad (John Klinger) took over the farm somewhere between 1930 and 1935. It was essentially a dairy farm, pretty typical. The fox, and later the mink, were just extra business."
But fur lost its appeal after World War II.
