    Description

Note how neatly and tightly woven the body of this small trap is.
The carved mantle over the gate features a traditional Malaysian orchid motif.
Malaysian aristocracy used these highly decorative traps to catch tiny blue- breasted quail native to Malaysia.
A domesticated female would be tethered inside the trap.
A male would trip the trap when entering in pursuit of the female.
A second inner door would then by lowered by the trapper, and the metal rings on each side can be lowered to further secure the birds.
A carrying handle is part of the design.
This trap is just under 7” long, and 9” high.
From my research, most of these traps are about 10” by 12” high.
    I believe this is a 20
    th
century reproduction, which may account for it’s compact size.
